Legends was the third expansion set of Magic the Gathering, released in June 1994. The symbol for the set was the capital of a column. It was the first expansion set to have boosters sold with fifteen cards, instead of eight. The Set sold out very quickly, especially in the United Kingdom, where they were in great demand at the time of release.
Notable Errors
Each booster box contained half of the avalible uncommons. The United Kingdom recieved boosters which contained one of the halves, making it extremely hard to complete the set.
New Mechanics
Legends added four new mechanics to the Magic the Gathering game:
Rampage: the creature became more powerful as more creatures blocked it
Banding: allowed creatures with banding plus one without to attack as a one
Multicoloured cards: cards with a gold bordered had multiple mana colour casting costs
Legendary: only one of each legendary card could be in play at any one time
Famous Cards
Mana Drain: This extremely powerful card is considered by many to be one of the best counter-spells available, as well as countering, it adds to your mana pool. All for the same mana price of a standard counter-spell. It is currently a format-defining card in vintage.
Moat: A class card to slow down aggro decks, especially goblins, threshold... And if its pure red deck they could be quite screwed if they are not packing a dragon or two :). Very effect card for 4 mana! Its been fun to play with it again in MTGOs Masters Edition.
There are many more notable cards within this set, even ontop of the cards pictured below.
Collecting
This is one of the best sets to start collecting and was one of my first to complete. The set has 310 cards, 121 rares, 114 uncommons and 75 commons. The commons are accessable at low prices, allowing you to build up the base of your collection quite cheaply. Then there are those harder to find uncommons especially in the UK, with half of them never exported within the booster boxes. There is a large selection of rares, from the standard to the hard to source ones, so its a challenging set to complete with some real power cards in. The set is also notable for being the first ever set to print multi coloured cards, as well as introducing the Legendary status for creatures and lands, both of which have had a significant impact on the course of Magic the Gatherings history.
